The dangerous assumption
Store owners hear "fully hosted" and conclude nothing needs attention. Then a theme update overwrites customizations, an app subscription lapses and breaks a page section, product images bloat the store to a four-second load, an app conflict silently disables a payment method on mobile, and nobody notices for weeks because Shopify itself never went down.
What Shopify maintenance actually covers
App audit and management. The average store accumulates apps for reviews, upsells, popups, shipping, loyalty and analytics. Each injects scripts, and abandoned apps keep charging while slowing every page. Audit quarterly, remove what nobody uses, and check that remaining apps are still actively maintained.
Theme and code care. Custom theme edits are overwritten by theme updates unless they were made properly. Keep customizations documented, test theme updates on a duplicate theme first, and never edit the live theme directly during business hours.
Speed work. Compress and correctly size product images, limit apps injecting scripts, avoid multiple slider and popup tools, and keep third-party pixels under control. Store speed is mostly app discipline plus image discipline.
Checkout and order-flow testing. Weekly test orders on mobile, verification that confirmation emails send, coupons apply, shipping rates calculate at real postcodes and payment methods work across devices. A store can look perfect and quietly reject every Apple Pay attempt.
Product data integrity. Inventory syncs, price rules, variant availability and feed accuracy for Google Shopping and marketplaces.
SEO health. Redirects when products or collections are removed, unique titles and descriptions, schema for products and reviews, and clean internal linking. Deleted products without redirects are the most common Shopify SEO leak.
Peak-season readiness. Before your busy period: full checkout regression testing, app audit, image pass, and a documented rollback plan for anything changed in the two weeks prior.
Shopify versus WooCommerce maintenance
WooCommerce needs everything Shopify needs plus the platform layer: hosting, updates, security and backups. Shopify removes that layer for a monthly fee. Neither is maintenance-free; the difference is how much of the stack you own, which our ecommerce maintenance guide breaks down further.
What it costs
Shopify-specific maintenance runs $100 to $400 per month depending on catalog size, app count and integrations. Our Commerce plan at $199 covers app audits, speed work, checkout and order-flow testing, monitoring, SEO fixes and six hours of monthly edits, month to month.
FAQ
Does Shopify back up my store? Shopify maintains platform-level infrastructure, but you should keep your own store data exports and theme backups. Recovering a customization or a bulk edit gone wrong is your responsibility.
Do I need maintenance for a small Shopify store? At minimum, weekly checkout tests and a quarterly app audit. Those two habits prevent most silent revenue loss.
Can apps really slow my store that much? Yes. App scripts are the leading cause of slow Shopify stores, ahead of images in stores with many installs.
Who fixes theme code problems? Not Shopify support, beyond basic guidance. Theme and app-conflict work needs a developer, which is the gap a maintenance plan fills.
